Recurring Compliance Training
Sexual Harassment Training Isn't a One-Time Event
Many employers believe that distributing an employee handbook or requiring a single harassment training course is enough. Unfortunately, history has shown that policies alone do not prevent workplace harassment. Employees and supervisors must understand not only what constitutes inappropriate behavior, but also how to recognize it, report it, and respond appropriately when concerns arise.
Every employee should receive sexual harassment prevention training when hired and again at regular intervals. While many organizations choose to retrain employees every two years, employers should also provide refresher training whenever laws change, policies are updated, employees become supervisors, or workplace concerns indicate additional education is needed. Supervisors should receive additional instruction because they are often the first individuals to receive complaints and have a legal responsibility to act.
Training should explain prohibited conduct, reporting procedures, retaliation protections, bystander responsibilities, and the employer's investigation process. Most importantly, employers should maintain documentation confirming that every employee completed the required training. If litigation occurs years later, those records become valuable evidence demonstrating the employer's commitment to prevention.
An informed workforce is one of the strongest defenses against harassment. Regular training reinforces expectations, encourages employees to speak up early, and helps create a respectful workplace where inappropriate conduct is recognized and addressed before it escalates into a legal dispute.
Preventing workplace harassment requires more than compliance—it requires education, accountability, and a culture of respect.
